Attachment-Informed Therapy:
Understanding Relationships & Emotional Security

Attachment-Informed Therapy is a therapeutic approach based on attachment theory, originally developed by John Bowlby and expanded by Mary Ainsworth. This framework helps individuals understand how early relationships with caregivers shape emotional responses, self-worth, and relational patterns throughout life.
At Wellness Counselling Centre, we use attachment-informed approaches to help individuals, couples, and families explore their relational patterns, build emotional security, and develop healthier, more fulfilling connections.

How Attachment Impacts Mental Health & Relationships
Attachment styles—formed in early childhood—can influence emotional regulation, self-esteem, and the ability to trust and connect with others. These patterns may show up in:
-
Romantic Relationships – Struggles with intimacy, trust, or emotional connection
-
Family & Friendships – Difficulty setting boundaries, feeling emotionally distant, or craving approval
-
Self-Worth & Emotional Regulation – Feeling anxious, fearful of rejection, or avoiding emotional closeness
-
Parenting & Generational Cycles – Repeating or working to break patterns from one's own upbringing
-
Child & Youth Development – Emotional outbursts, difficulty with separation, or struggles with social connection
Attachment styles are not fixed—with awareness and support, individuals can build secure relationships and emotional resilience.

Who Can Benefit from Attachment-Informed Therapy?
Attachment-informed therapy is helpful for individuals of all ages and is particularly beneficial for those experiencing:
-
Adults Struggling with Relationship Insecurity – Fear of abandonment, difficulty expressing needs, or avoidance of emotional intimacy
-
Couples Wanting to Improve Emotional Connection – Strengthening intimacy, addressing trust issues, or improving communication
-
Parents & Caregivers – Strengthening secure attachment with children, learning positive discipline strategies, or breaking intergenerational cycles
-
Children & Youth – Difficulty with emotional regulation, anxiety in relationships, separation anxiety, or struggling with peer connections
-
Individuals Healing from Childhood Trauma or Neglect – Processing past experiences to develop a more secure sense of self
-
Families Navigating Adoption, Foster Care, or Parental Separation – Supporting children and caregivers in strengthening emotional bonds
-

By understanding attachment patterns, individuals can develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
