MODALITY:
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT):
Strengthening Relationships and Emotional Resilience

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a time-limited, evidence-based approach that focuses on how our relationships and social experiences affect our emotional well-being. It helps individuals explore patterns in communication, grief, role transitions, and unresolved relational stress.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we use interpersonal therapy to support clients in navigating life transitions, improving communication, and healing through healthier relationships.

How Interpersonal Therapy Can Help

Interpersonal therapy focuses on building insight and skills to improve how we relate to others. It may support:

  • Processing grief or unresolved loss

  • Adjusting to life transitions (e.g., becoming a parent, changing careers, relationship endings)

  • Strengthening communication and conflict resolution

  • Addressing social withdrawal, isolation, or role confusion

  • Reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety linked to relational stress

IPT helps clients connect emotional well-being to the quality of their relationships and support systems.

Who Can Benefit from Interpersonal Therapy

This approach is well-suited for:

  • Individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, or grief related to interpersonal issues

  • Teens and adults navigating identity or role transitions

  • Clients who feel misunderstood, disconnected, or isolated

  • People looking to improve communication, assertiveness, or relationship boundaries

  • Anyone wanting to feel more confident in their social and emotional relationships

IPT focuses on the here and now, helping clients make meaningful changes in current relationships and support systems.

What to Expect in Interpersonal Therapy

IPT is typically structured and time-limited (often 12–16 sessions), though it can be extended. In sessions, clients may:

  • Explore their current relationships and social patterns

  • Identify key interpersonal stressors contributing to emotional distress

  • Develop new communication and coping strategies

  • Practice expressing feelings more effectively

  • Work through transitions or losses that have impacted self-identity or support

The goal is not only to relieve emotional symptoms but to improve relational functioning in daily life.

Our Approach to Interpersonal Therapy

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we may integrate interpersonal therapy with:

  • Relational Therapy – Deepening emotional insight through safe, therapeutic connection

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy – Supporting emotional awareness and present-moment connection

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Challenging unhelpful thought patterns that impact self-esteem and communication

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – Building skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and effective interpersonal boundaries

We work collaboratively with clients to support healing, connection, and confidence in navigating life’s relationships.

Connection Is a Path to Healing

Interpersonal Therapy offers a supportive space to build healthier, more meaningful relationships—both with yourself and with the people who matter most.
